Sport Berkey - Purifying water on the go!
Keys, Check, Wallet/Purse, Check, Phone, Check, Fill your water bottle up with Berkey water, shoot its empty. You don’t have time to filter a new batch of water, so you contemplate filling up your bottle from the tap or refrigerator. This is where the Sport Berkey comes in as your saving grace. Just fill it up with water from the tap and you are on your way with purified water at your fingertips whenever needed. Are you going to be out all day or at the gym where you know you’re going to go through all of your water? Bring your Sport and let it do the filtering for you with every drink.
The Sport Berkey filter is made from the same materials that make up the Black Berkey filter elements. The filters are not as powerful since the water does not have the same contact and filtering time but it is the perfect alternative when needed. Check out all of the contaminants the Sport Berkey removes.
The Sport works in a little different way than your Berkey water filter. To prime the filter to get the bottle up and running you will need to pour water into the bottle and make sure the cap is on tight. Pull the lid down and this will expose the straw. Next squeeze the bottle, this will force water out of the straw. Repeat this step a total of two times to ensure that all of the manufacturing dust is out of the filter and straw, and your Sport Berkey water bottle is ready to go! At times the straw can become pinched not allowing water to go through the straw. You may be able to see where the straw is pinched. Remove the lid/straw and grasp the straw with your thumb and index finger where the straw exits the cap and gently tug at the straw while rotating it between your thumb and index finger. This should remove any pinches and allow water to start flowing through.
Not going to be using your Sport Berkey for a while? Some steps should be taken to maximize the lifespan of the filter. To store you will need to flush the bottle with one of the following solutions. Either 1/10 tsp of unscented chlorine bleach or a 50/50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water. After you have flushed the bottle rinse it with water and flush again. Then allow all components to air dry. Reassemble once dry and seal the bottle. It is now good to go for the next time you want to use it
So we know what the filter removes, how to operate it, how to clean/store it, now how about when to replace the filter. Each of the Sport Berkey filter is rated to filter for up to 100 gallons. The 100 gallons is if you are filling the bottle up with municipal water sources, ie tap water, refrigerator filtered water, drinking fountains. This equates to 640 refills. For questionable sources like a river, the filter will last 25 gallons or 160 refills. The easiest way to compute the use is to record how many times you use the bottle in a week and divide that by the refill life of your bottle. Then set a reminder or mark it in a calendar a few weeks ahead of time to get a replacement, and you will never be without your purified water.
